The gasTracker2™ system of Pergam-Italia is an instrument for locating buried gas pipelines of polyethylene, PVC, and other materials. Produced by the French firm Made, in collaboration with Gaz De France, one of the world's largest companies in the natural gas field, it is successfully distributed worldwide for over ten years.
GasTracker2™ can locate an empty or gas-filled pipeline in a matter of minutes with a margin of error of a few centimetres.
Gas distribution companies can often rely on only obsolete, imprecise maps of the distribution network. On an emergency call, there is a risk of excavating in the wrong area or with an excavation larger than necessary. With the GasTracker2™ system, just the pipeline of interest can be found in a few minutes and can be followed for hundreds of meters up to a kilometre.
The system consists of two parts: a transmitter of sounds that are sent to the inside of the polyethylene pipe and a receiver.
The transmitter, with a resonator tank, is connected to the pipe through a standard meter box or a pressure-testing valve. Through the connection, the transmitter sends a signal through the gas—or air, if the pipe is empty—generating a vibration that is reproduced in the surrounding ground and collected by the receiver at the surface. The transmitter is extremely simple to use and has only two options: ON and OFF.
The GasTracker™ receiver, using a listening device placed on the ground and connected via Bluetooth to a tablet or smartphone with the application, displays the results. The receiver has two modes: Prelocation, to rapidly find the area where the pipe is buried, and Pin-point, to precisely locate the pipe and what direction it takes.
